The objective of this partnership is to train a new generation of binational, multidisciplinary water resources experts to ensure responsible decision making for sustainable water resources in Sonora and the region. Six Mexican graduate students (four master’s and two doctoral candidates), studying at Michigan Technological University (MTU) through the TIES program, have already made significant contributions in engineering, social sciences, and environmental policy that will influence future development in the state of Sonora. For example, one student produced an engineering document and helped the community win a $250,000 grant to construct a sewage lagoon in Tesopaco, Sonora. Another has helped the Ford Automotive Plant in Hermosillo determine the “True Cost of Water” to the plant. This will help Ford in its plans to reuse and treat water as it doubles the size of its operations in Hermosillo. The students continue their contributions as they return home and are employed in the university or in agencies that will influence water utilization and policy in the State and region. The TIES program has led to a sustainable linkage between MTU and Universidad de Sonora; the two universities signed a new collaborative agreement in November 2004 and laid the groundwork for expanded student and faculty exchange and collaborative research.
