To build Uganda’s capacity to respond to environmentally related health hazards, the partner institutions established undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental science and health at Makerere University that address specific public health problems in Uganda. The initial focus was on clean drinking water, clean wastewater, and solid waste management.

Three young Ugandans were trained in environmental health at the State University of New York at Albany to enable them to return to Uganda as faculty in the new program. The students were partly supported by additional funding, including a grant from the Fogarty International Center at the National Institute for Public Health.
