Washington State University (WSU) and the University of Botswana (UB) engaged in pilot activities to 1) improve institutional capacity in the management and use of natural resources, 2) integrate technology into teaching, 3) communicate scientific results to local communities, and 4) increase community participation in natural resource management. WSU and UB faculty designed a joint degree program in environmental science, enhanced course materials for undergraduate and graduate students, and developed outreach programs to improve soil conservation, agroforestry, and sustainable management of indigenous flora. Partnership activities included an e-learning internship at WSU, and Ph.D. training in biological systems engineering, plant pathology, and animal science/veterinary medicine. The partners integrated UB’s distance education courses with the new School of Environment and Natural Resource Sciences program at WSU, and developed a collaborative graduate course on policies for natural resource use in WebCT format.
