This collaboration aimed to reduce the shortage of housing and provide healthier living conditions in South Africa’s townships by improving indigenous building methods and materials and by developing house-building uses for materials that are currently unused or underused. The success of building one demonstration house led the local housing authority to cost-share the construction of two additional demonstration houses, resulting in a total of three small-scale demonstration houses being built with low-cost, locally available materials.
The local housing authority also reviewed some of the features of the three demonstration houses in its efforts to update and upgrade government-subsidized housing.
