This university partnership established an applied ecology research program focusing on the problem of restoring abandoned agricultural lands in Sonora, Mexico. This academic program strengthens Mexicans’ human capacity to better conserve natural resources, manage land use and promote sustainable use of the desert lands of northern Mexico. The partnership started an outreach program transfer research findings to members of local communities in Sonora and to receive community input on their challenges in managing natural resources. Two Mexican students earned masters’ of science degrees from NAU as a result of this partnership. Other key accomplishments included research on land use impacts to diversity and function of Sonora desert ecosystems and collaborative meetings amongst the U.S. and Mexican participants.
