This TIES partnership is advancing the software industry in Mexico by providing opportunities for faculty and students from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores, Monterrey (ITESM) to gain training and expertise in software engineering. The partnership designed new undergraduate programs and curricula at ITESM to address the shortage of qualified software developers who can meet the information technology needs of Mexico. In July 2004, Southern Methodist (SMU) conducted a one-week workshop on software project management in Monterrey for 23 Mexican faculty representing 10 campuses in different cities. These faculty then incorporated into their own courses the methods and techniques they learned. In December 2004, six faculty members from ITESM began study toward graduate certificates in software engineering, taking SMU courses via distance education. Partnership directors from both institutions participated in a workforce development roundtable as part of the Partnership for Prosperity Entrepreneurial Conference in Guadalajara in June 2004.
