Collaborating universities trained Mexican students in modern technologies of water treatment and spurred Mexican innovation through technology transfer. At Lamar University, three Mexican graduate students completed master’s degrees and one student completed a Ph.D degree under the auspices of the program. The partnership conducted three short courses on advanced water treatment technologies in Torreon and Saltillo, which drew 99 students. The project developed new electrocoagulation technlogy in Mexico at the partners’ universities and resulted in two Mexican patent applications. Lamar University, in collaboration with Kaselco, a Texas-based water treatment company, and with the cooperation of Ecolimpio, a Mexican environmental waste management company in Saltillo, took the first mobile electrocoagulation unit into Mexico to remove contaminants from water. Ecolimpio subsequently bought the unit and Kaselco built a new improved unit for the project. Ecolimpio and Kaselco signed an agreement for Ecolimpio to market the electrocoagulation technology to more efficiently purify water in Mexico and Latin America.
