This collaboration is strengthening the aquaculture industry in Mexico by (1) developing the skills of Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) faculty to train students, (2) improving faculty extension contacts with farmers so they can assist with problems of disease, and (3) organizing local and international conferences. In July 2004, UAT hosted a shrimp pathology short course taught by University of Arizona (UAZ) faculty. The course drew UAT faculty and students, public sector officials, and two technicians from SyAqua, a private shrimp hatchery and breeding program. (As a matching donation to the program SyAqua paid the cost of participation for an additional person.) The partnership arranged for a research program at UAZ for a UAT faculty member and an independentent study program at UAZ for a Sonora graduate student. Upon completing the program, the Sonora student found a full-time research position with a shrimp hatchery near Mazatlan. Four students at UAT were awarded TIES scholarships for master’s degree programs in aquaculture. The TIES web site was upgraded with additional content and more links to the aquaculture industry in Mexico.
