University of Arizona (UA) and Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados (CINVESTAN) created a partnership and a consortium of nine Mexican universities to provide and support environmental education and to empower Mexican professionals to resolve the deterioration of environmental quality and public health due to toxic pollutants. Two Mexican graduate students are increasing their research experience and knowledge through pursuit of long-term (two semester) fellowships at UA, with five more students scheduled to follow in 2005. In September 2004, UA faculty conducted a two-day course on toxicology at CINVESTAN in Mexico City, which drew 78 graduate students. The collaboration placed two chapters of material on bioremediation in Spanish on the project web site. All these activities support the overall goal of leveraging funds to form a permanent U.S.–Mexico binational center for environmental pollutants with headquarters at UA.
