This collaboration is increasing the capacity of both lead institutions to conduct training, research, and community service that will strengthen the public health infrastructure along the U.S.–Mexico border region of Arizona and Sonora. Under this partnership, the first of six Mexican students completed her first semester of MPH studies at University of Arizona (UA) in December 2004. Once trained, these public health professionals will assist with further training by working with El Colegio de Sonora (COLSON) to build the infrastructure for their diplomado and MPH programs. In January 2005, the partners held a joint planning meeting in Hermosillo for a one-week workshop, “Principals of Public Health,” was held in Hermosillo in April 2005; a second workshop is planned for July. Five faculty exchanges in 2005 will focus on improving the health status of vulnerable populations in Arizona and Sonora, who are at greatest risk for disease and have the least access to health-care services.
