This partnership is increasing the capability of public policy professionals to address development issues critical to the economic and political relationship of Mexico and the United States. In June 2004, Mexican and U.S. public policy students participated in six- and eight-week internships with the Mexican federal government on issues such as assessing watershed policies, evaluating social welfare programs, and improving the transparency of government. Chicago-based internships are being developed for summer 2005. In November 2004, the University of Chicago (UChicago) hosted 19 economics students from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexicó, who attended classes and toured the UChicago Graduate School of Public Policy. The first scholarship student from Universidad de Iberoamericana (Ibero) began her second quarter of training in the master of public policy program at UChicago, and recruitment of the next cadre of students is underway. In February 2005, UChicago faculty and staff visited Mexico and met with government agencies interested in providing summer 2005 internships for TIES public policy students. During this visit, UChicago and Ibero also discussed plans for a graduate public policy program at Ibero.
