This partnership improved K–12 and post-secondary education in marine sciences and coastal management through student and faculty training, exchanges, and joint research projects. Four Mexican graduate students completed master degrees in marine sciences studies at the University of Connecticut (UConn), and several other students participated in short collaborative research activities with UConn faculty members. Teacher training to integrate marine sciences into the K–12 curriculum began with two summer institutes in marine environmental education for 12 educators from Baja California and 10 from Connecticut. By organizing a workshop on extension practices to support the fisheries and aquaculture industry, the TIES partnership reinforced UABC’s capacity to work with stakeholders in coastal management issues. As a result of the workshop, a member of the State Office for Fisheries and Aquaculture trained for five months at the Sea Grant Program in Connecticut. A proposal is being developed to establish an extension program for the state of Baja California based on the Sea Grant. This will be a model for other coastal states in Mexico.
