The partnership between OSU and the Mexican consortium of institutions indicated above was formed to build expertise and human capacity to enhance the ability of Mexican partner institutions to train students on campus and individuals in rural regions. The partnership was built around four primary efforts: (1) master degree training for Mexican students at OSU, (2) training for and delivery of continuing education to Mexican forestry and processing organizations, (3) joint curriculum development, and (4) a forest industry study tour in Oregon for Mexican participants. The partnership successfully offered non-degree training in sustainable forestry to 512 individuals, and developed links with Comision Nacional Forestal (CONAFOR) that resulted in over $100,000 in leveraged contributions. As a result of this partnership, the University of Guadalajara has received a new grant from the International Tropical Timber Organization which identifies OSU as a partner in the project.
