This partnership will strengthen graduate studies in protected area management at ECOSUR by providing university training and research at the master’s degree level and engaging students and/or faculty in a variety of short-term training activities, faculty exchanges, and internships on topics, which include protected area planning, infrastructure design including site and environmental assessment, visitor management, public participation techniques, cross-boundary collaboration, conflict resolution, monitoring and evaluation of impacts, and environmental mitigation strategies. The partners will also develop a concentration in protected area management at ECOSUR and establish the Southern Training Group at ECOSUR comprised of government agencies and local and international NGOs already active in protected area capacity building in the region. The overall goal of the partnership is to assist ECOSUR become a center of excellence for both long-term and short-term capacity building in Chiapas and Oaxaca and help establish the Southern Training Group as a more formalized consortium.
