This partnership is improving productivity, profitability, and rural incomes in Mexico’s Gulf region through a program of training and decision support to the ruminant livestock industry. Significant developments thus far include: (1) four short courses delivered at Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) to help UADY graduate students and faculty, Veracruz faculty, Mexican undergraduates, and representatives of governmental organizations and regional cattle producers better define and understand the problems affecting farmers; (2) a household survey of sheep and cattle producers completed by a Cornell–UADY research team, which has yielded fundamental information on constraints and opportunities as well as fostering interest in the program; and (3) an undergraduate exchange program established between UADY and Cornell.
