WASHINGTON, DC (September 10, 2009) — Roy Zimmermann has been appointed director of programs at Higher Education for Development. He brings more than nine years of management experience in educational and international development programming to HED. He has managed and worked on international development projects funded by USAID, and also by UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank. In his previous position he served as deputy director of global initiatives at the American Institutes for Research, where he strategically led improvements in education reform and designed information communication technology solutions for education development in developing countries.
Zimmermann fills a post previously held by Jeanne-Marie Duval, who has recently been promoted to deputy executive director of HED. In his new position, Zimmermann will manage and support program staff members’ diverse portfolios of USAID Associate Awards and facilitate opportunities for new proposals for programs that address challenging global development needs. He will work closely with USAID, the six presidential higher education associations and other higher education development stakeholders nationally and internationally to craft and execute requests for applications.
HED Executive Director Dr. Tully Cornick is pleased about the appointment. “Dr. Zimmermann’s academic background in education will complement HED’s work,” Cornick said. “He has experience managing a huge portfolio of programs in 25 developing countries and we are happy to have him supporting the HED team.”
Zimmermann holds a Ph.D. and master’s degree in education from the University of California, Los Angeles. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in history and education from Emory University.
HED, funded by a cooperative agreement with USAID, was founded by the six major presidential U.S. higher education associations to engage U.S. colleges and universities in international development. Those associations are the American Council on Education, the American Association of Community Colleges, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Association of American Universities, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
